God’s Plan of reconciliation and transformation is carried out by those called to His purpose through the making of disciples.

A disciple is someone who dedicates his life to learning of Christ, imitating Christ, and following Christ in his daily life. Jesus’ final command to his original disciples in Mathew 28:19 was to “go and make disciples of all nations.” Through them, and the disciples they made, this Great Commission has passed down to us, as we in turn will pass it to those who follow as our disciples.

As followers of Christ, we are to do many things. However, it is the making of the disciples that is the main effort. Waypoint supports the main effort of God’s Plan through its Mission: equipping people for life in Christ through community in order to make disciples who make disciples.

The means by which Waypoint makes disciples is through equipping people for life in Christ through community. In this context, equipping means mental and spiritual preparation for the act of discipleship.

Just as a master equips his apprentice with what he needs to perform his work, Waypoint provides its people with the skills and attributes of a maker of disciples who has moved past belief into action in furtherance of God’s Plan.

Waypoint does this through community because that is the most effective way, following Jesus’ model of sending his disciples out to spread the gospel in pairs (Mark 6:7) to bolster their credibility and for their mutual support. It also reflects the etymology of the word equip, which was to fit out a ship for a journey, not only with necessary supplies but also with the crew of men who would live and work together to carry out the vessel’s mission.

Having come and seen, Waypoint’s people then go and do—equipped not only with the skills they will need to make disciples, but also with relationships that will not be quickly broken.
